kiwiSaturday morning dawned bright and sunny after two long weeks of solid rain, and I woke up feeling great. But after my morning coffee I felt a bit odd, and at lunchtime I didn’t have much appetite. Then I started feeling all weak and woozy, so around 4 o’clock I thought I’d better lie down for a bit, because in the evening I had a special tapas tour lined up with Twitter pals @EricBurgess and @LauraWBurgess (and their new mascot Kev the Kiwi), something we’d planned months ago. Well, when I woke up again at 6 o’clock I was shivering and nauseous and knew there was no way I was going to make it. So I did my first ever Sevilla Tapas Tour from my bed!

First of all, Peter met up with Eric & Laura a half hour before his own private tour started, brought them to their first stop and got them set up with starter tapas and sherries. After that I took over and, staying in touch by Twitter DMs, I helped them find Bodeguita Romero after previously getting in touch with Alejandro. Luckily I’d just had a sherry-filled afternoon the week before with José & Peter, so Alejandro knew what to do and he took very good care of them. It was kind of fun, doing a virtual tour, and better than not being with them at all. But I do look forward to finally meeting them in person when they come back in September.

porktastic

Love getting special request Sevilla Tapas Tours. One such request came my way this week, people wanting to experience as many porky delights as possible in one afternoon. As you can see… we did quite well.

One of the best things about my job is that I never really know what’s going to happen when I meet my guests for the first time and we head off to our first tapas bar. Yesterday was a prime example of this when we ran into graffiti artist Alexandra del Bene, who was jazzing up the shutters at Bodeguita Romero when we arrrived. Then she ended up joining us for a couple of tapitas and some wine (Alex is in pink), saying it was too hot to keep working outside. As you can see, she totally charmed my guests.

Later we ran into someone with a young eagle on her arm, who offered to let us hold it for photos. A bit scammy, but also fun. Then we happened upon my artist friend Norberto on his way home with his portable printing press, and finally we saw The Dude! Rather a full day. And a typical day in my life too.

vermutSo remember when I fell down the sherry rabbit hole a few years ago? It could be that vermouth (vermut in Spanish) will be next. The other day I visited a new vermutería near my house and the seeds for a Vermut & Tapas Tour for We Love Tapas were sown. Watch this space…

day jobmarket “picnic” during a Market & Tapas Tour

During Semana Santa last week I only offered tapas tours at lunchtime, due to the massive crowds and processions in the evenings. Bars are also packed solid then. I remember back when I first started doing the tours I would do them pretty much whenever I was asked, including when the Semana Santa processions were on. Lesson learned. I guess in some ways it was “fun” in the sense of everything being very unpredictable, with clients knowing that anything could happen (or not happen, as in, not moving from one spot for half an hour). But in the end I decided this really didn’t represent my Sevilla Tapas Tours and, frankly, these tours were exhausting.

Anyhow, last week was a nice balance of being busy but also with enough time to relax. And it struck me around mid-week how it felt a bit odd only working during the day and having the evenings free. Like a proper day job! Because I’d say about 80% of my tours happen in the evening. So it was a nice break from the routine.
