my angels

A massive shout out to my angels… friends Fiona, Sharon and Peter who have stepped up to help out lately. It started off this past summer when I realised (once again) that I was getting way too many tour requests than I could handle. This always happens, to be honest. And often Peter helps out, because he loves doing the tours and it’s some extra work for him. But it wasn’t enough. So I talked to Fiona and Sharon to see if they were looking for some extra freelance work. I’ve known Fiona forever and met Sharon at an olive oil event last year and so I knew that we shared the same philosophy when it came to food tours, and that I could trust them with passing on my clients to them.

BUT THEN… when it became clear I wouldn’t be able to do the tours I’d already booked for Sept/Oct – and Peter was already doing as many as possible – these two lovely ladies stepped up and have totally helped me out. I mean, I know it’s not my fault that I CAN’T WALK, but it was also killing me that I would have to cancel these tours. And now, thanks to the three of them, nothing has had to be cancelled and I am so grateful for that. Now I can relax about this at least, knowing my clients are in excellent hands. Thanks so much guys!

nigella (1)

A couple of weeks ago I saw that Nigella Lawson was back on Bluesky – or at least giving it another go – and she posted a recipe to her spicy “green sauce”. A simple yet totally addictive salsa. Vegetarian/vegan too. My version is a bit of an adaptation, but you can see both below…

great pumpkin (1)

Here’s Peter with a pumpkin that weighs more than he does. We stopped in for a snack at Doña Emilia yesterday, which is the riverside restaurant/tapas bar of the Manolo Mayo family. This 100 kilo specimen was apparently their runner-up in the largest veg-fruit competition held annually in Los Palacios (where the Mayo family is from and where they have their original restaurant and their own vegetable garden). So the even bigger pumpkin and giant watermelons (also winners) stayed in Los Palacios.

bar lento

Last July I finally got to meet Sarah and Ian in person. Sarah and I had been online pals for years so it was great to finally get together and go out on a full-on Sherry & Tapas Tour. At the time Sarah was telling me about her plans to open a tapas bar in Winchester, UK called Bar Lento. And guess what? It opened in May! And by all accounts it’s going very well, with locals and visitors alike showing an interest. So this most recent trip back was to do a little research and hook up with some sherry suppliers. And I was very happy they made some time to meet up for lunch during their quick visit. We started off at Taberna Manolo Cateca (Sevilla’s sherry temple) and then went to one of my new all time faves Augurio. A fabulous afternoon.

If you’re in the Winchester area, check out Bar Lento.

chopper

Getting a bit hooked on Instagram recipe reels lately, so much so that I now have a whole list of links in a file for me to get back to (eventually). Most of the ones that catch my eye tend to be vegetarian (?) but the other day I came across one for simple pan-grilled squid with pico de gallo. If you don’t know pico de gallo it’s a chunky “sauce” traditionally made from finely chopped tomato, onion, red & green peppers, with salt, olive oil, lime juice, and fresh cilantro. And it’s delicious. Anyhow, I was both looking forward to and dreading making this squid dish because I have no patience for dicing veg. And then I remembered having an “onion chopper” back in Toronto and wondered if they still made them, or something similar. And look what I found at trusty El Corte Inglés. On sale too! Now just have to find some shelf space…
