lunch (3)

So remember Dan & Deb? They are home in London wishing they were here, and cooking up a storm on Dan’s Instagram @dan.jamon. We’ve been staying in touch, and looking forward to meeting up again some day at Las Teresas. THEN, I got a surprise voice message from Jeanine (La Azotea) the other day saying that those two lovelies had purchased a voucher for me to get some home delivery. So nice of them! As you know, I am still mostly keeping myself in Phase 1 of the de-escalation process, while the rest of the country has moved on to Phase 3. Which means I still haven’t dared to go out to a bar or restaurant, even for a Cold Beer O’clock. And as much as cooking lunch has been one of the things saving me from going completely bonkers from boredom at home, this was a total treat. Really my dream La Azotea meal.

lunch (1)

I got one of the saquitas (crispy pastry filled with prawns, cheese and leeks), my favourite battered prawn salad with kimchi sauce, THOSE rabbit ribs and a bottle of Chan de Rosas albariño. Heaven.

Gotta say that La Azotea was the first restaurant in Sevilla (that I know of) to start offering pick up and delivery services. They were on it just like that, up and running four days after Lockdown. Impressive. Jeanine and Juan along with their amazing team have been keeping Sevilla fed and happy all this time, and now it was my turn thanks to Dan & Deb.

it was SO hard not to give her a big hug

Now La Azotea is open for restaurant service (at their Conde de Barajas location) and they have everything perfectly set up for proper social distancing, and are also continuing with take-away and delivery service. Whatever it takes, these guys are there for you. xx

The evening appreciation applause continue around the country, and the other day I met Jeannie & Steve after they had put a banner out on their balcony celebrating their 50th anniversary (I ran to fill a wine glass and toast them too). Then I heard Jeannie saying something to her neighbour across the street and I thought… hmmm, definitely not Spanish! So the next evening after the applause I shouted hello to them and asked where they were from.

Turns out they are from Florida and got trapped here when the lockdown happened and, after their hotel was forced to close, were lucky enough to find temporary accomodation in my street. So we are now in touch on WhatsApp and Facebook and it’s lovely, this getting to know the neighbours thing. There’s a bright side to everything, isn’t there?

You came into my life just by chance, and you stayed in my life because you chose to. You wanted to. And unlike with many people I’ve known, your friendship never waivered, not once, not even a little bit.  I smile remembering how you’d tell me “yeah, that’s because they’re assholes”. That meant absolutely everything to me.

Annie, I’ve been sitting by your bedside, so to speak, for these past weeks and riding that rollercoaster with Kenton, during your good days, and the times when it looked like it was all over and then you’d rally yet again. As Kenton put it, you’re as stubborn as a mule and as tough as old boots, and always the strong one while the rest of us are in bits.

And we were in bits many times, and then the next day you’d be up drinking a smoothie at the hospice and chatting away. Oh Annie. It’s been awhile since we were able to talk, but Kenton told me he mentioned me to you the other day and you smiled and said “of course I remember Shawn”. But other times you were barely conscious. And so while this really breaks my heart, of course you couldn’t have gone on like that. I imagine how annoyed you’d be.

I’ve never lost someone I love before, Annie. It’s taken heartbreak to a whole other level. As I said to Kenton, I guess it’s lucky I hardly love anyone so this isn’t likely to happen many more times during what is left of my life.

Silver linings.

My life will not be the same without you my beautiful, loving, smart, funny and fiercely loyal friend. But I know that I am a better person for having known you. And I will never stop loving and missing you. ❤

We love each other and try our best, everything else is meaningless

We hard arsed bitches have to stick together. Fuck everyone else. Love you, Shawn. X

netiquette

I think it’s safe to say that people are making much more use of the internet to stay in touch in these Days of Coronavirus. Aside from the usual written platforms like email, whatsapp and messenger, the video options (which I never do) such as facetime, skype and zoom are also extra popular now. And of course there are all the social media platforms. I’ve never tweeted so much since, well, ever. Honestly, if my internet connection down I don’t know what I’d do. And neither would you because I wouldn’t be able to tell you about it.

One thing I’ve been wondering about these past three weeks (okay 24 days, but who’s counting) is how netiquette has changed with this new situation. I mean other than the usual “be polite”, “never tweet drunk” and “you don’t have to post every single thought in your head”, there are probably some new unspoken guidelines that we may not know about yet because, well, nobody talks about them.

After years of knowing each other “virtually”, and also working together, it was great to finally meet Maribel & Philip @iberiantraveler in person yesterday. A fun Sunday afternoon tapeo stopping in at three bars, with mucho vino, lots of talking. Hope they will come back soon.
