el cuelge, influencers, santi temblador, sevilla

A few months ago Santi Temblador, local chef and owner of “fine street food” tapas bar El Cuelge, put this up on his Instagram mentioning the few “foodies” in the city who come to his place of their own accord and PAY THEIR OWN BILLS. Yep, I’m one of them. His disdain for so-called influencers is well-known by now. A few short years ago these shysters were bold enough to ask for a free meal for themselves and “a few friends” in exchange for some Instagram publicity, but now it’s even worse. Along with free grub they also want to be paid!

Anyhow, Santi went viral (again) this week when a couple of “influencer content creators” got in touch for the usual freebie and he said fine, named a date and time, and these two guys showed up. Santi filmed the whole thing, with him making a big production of preparing a mortadella montadito (basically a bologna sandwich) which he plated as if it were michelin-star quality and then presented it with a flourish along with a couple glasses of tap water. When the two influencers looked confused Santi explained that whenever people come to his door asking for a food handout this is what he gives them.

Santi, I salute you! And I look forward to visiting you and your bar again soon.

week before christmas (1)

In an attempt to feel a bit Christmassy I went over to Casa Moreno today for a festive Cold Beer O’clock and resident poet Emilio gave me this little Christmas message (below) with a hand-drawn nativity scene and star on the Triana Bridge. I’ve somehow lost all my Christmas joy over the years – it used to be my favourite time of year –  and I really miss it. This message helped. I’ll see what I can do…

week before christmas (2)Give love and it will be born.

sherry lovers

Such a fun afternoon with these new sherry converts from Austin Texax. They came to me via a friend of a friend who I met here a few weeks ago. My ONLY paid work (so far) for the month of December. I honestly don’t know how I’m going to hold out while I wait (and wait and wait) to get the knee treatment I need so that I can walk – and work – again. It’s been months since I had to give up the walking tours, but I can still manage the sherry tastings as they take place in one spot, so I can hobble there and back again. Unfortunately there isn’t the same demand for tastings as for the tours.

Aside from missing the income… I just really miss THIS. Being me. Being out and about. Meeting and connecting with people, helping them enjoy their time here. And just having fun. For a couple of hours I feel in my element again and can forget about the pain. Anyhow, I’ve been looking for other ways to make a buck for some time now, simply because having all my eggs in one basket is not good for me either practically or emotionally. I wish I could say I had a couple of hot irons in the fire but I’m still stuck, spinning my wheels. Help? Any ideas?

The oldest independent shop in Sevilla (founded in 1856) this gorgeous stationers is a wondrous Aladdin’s cave full of any possible thing you can imagine in paper form. I just popped in for a pedestrian order of a refill for my old agenda and was taken back to not-so-long-ago times when there were several such shops in the city, selling all manner of things. From books to toys, houseware and hardware items, fabrics, art prints and posters, jewellery, fans and shawls, hats and gloves, specialty foods and wines… each small shop brimming with charm and personality and often one-of-a-kind items. Sadly all but gone now as chains take over and push the independents out. Sigh…
