food, friends, we love malaga

Quick lunch visit today with my friend Victor @WeLoveMalaga. He’s been “on tour” for 38 days straight with various groups, going from Málaga to Ronda, Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, Lisbon and back again. Last time he zipped through Sevilla I was busy with Kate and David and we couldn’t meet up, so it was great to spend a brief lunchtime catching up and enjoying some lovely food from the newly opened La Azotea Santa Cruz. And of course now I want to go back to Málaga… but first Lisbon I think.

How’s your Monday going?

Just spent a lovely afternoon with Lizzie @hollowlegs and James @pizzapilgrims who arrived in Sevilla from London this morning and were clearly in need of some tapas. Specifically some jamón Ibérico and manzanilla sherry… for starters. I’ve been “twitter pals” with Lizzie for awhile, so I was very happy to finally meet her in person and give her and James an introduction to Sevilla and tapas. And hey – I had a great time too! Love meeting new people, especially those who are interested in the whole food and culture thing, knowing that one doesn’t exist without the other.

I wasn’t sure how the afternoon would go, but starting off with excellent jamón is always a good move. In the end we went to four tapas bars – three traditional and one modern – and I lurched home around 5 o’clock after leaving Lizzie and James at the Mushrooms to enjoy the views from above, and possibly another drink. Man, I love twitter.

how grapes are made
This made me smile when I saw it on Twitter so I thought I’d share. 🙂
Couldn’t see a source for it but it reminds me of the clever photos created by Big Appetites.

la morcilla de burgoslittle sausage?

As some of you know, I’ve been having some trouble with the name Smudge and I’ve been wondering if it’s really just a milk name, to use until her real name comes to me. Also, “Smudge” just doesn’t come out naturally when I call her and feels more like it will be just one of the many nicknames that’ll come up over the years. But the obvious problem is… what to call her?

And so I am now trying out the name Morcilla (mor-thee-ya) because, well, she actually looks like a morcilla. And not just any morcilla but a Morcilla de Burgos, the best there is. For those who don’t know, morcilla is the Spanish word for black pudding, or blood sausage, something I grew up hating with a passion. My father was from Newfoundland and had all these weird food habits, one of them being that he loved to do a Sunday morning fry-up that featured black pudding. Bleh. Many years later when I moved to England I discovered that I hated the black pudding there as much as I did when I was a kid in Canada.

But then I moved to Spain and was introduced to the splendid morcilla de Burgos. It’s made with the usual blood and porky bits, but this particular sausage is also filled with rice, onions and spices and the result is both rich and flavourful. And honestly, isn’t her colouring just like a morcilla de Burgos?  What do you think?
