Remember when I stopped off in El Puerto de Santa María during my latest Cádiz Getaway to visit a couple of sherry bodegas? Well, one of them was one of my favourites, Gutiérrez Colosía. I’d been there before (during last year’s Cádiz Getaway) and have since been in touch with the owners and their two daughters at other sherry events in Jerez and Sevilla. So I was really pleased to see this video today by sisters Carmen & Carlota Gutiérrez (Carmen is painting, Carlota is filming) which I think is a sign of what is to come in the world of sherry. I love that these two girls have not only taken a huge step towards making sherry “cool” but they are also shattering the old school image by creating a new fresh & stylish look for sherry that will appeal to their generation. Gourmet Experience Duque sherry tasting with wines by Bodegas Emilio Hidalgo: La Panesa Fino Especial paired with ecological caviar from Riofrío, El Tresillo Amontillado Fino with yellowtail tuna mojama from Herpac, and Villapanés oloroso with artisanal zamorano sheep cheese by Vicente Pastor. I’m not much for cocktails but one of my most pleasant memories during the #SanlúcarGetaway was sitting at a beach bar on the Bajo de Guia at sunset. This cocktail is called the Sanlúcar and is made with manzanilla sherry, lime juice, olive oil, sugar, egg white, with hierbabuena & angostura bitters to finish. Delicious.

sanlucar sherry education
Continuing my sherry education, this time focusing on manzanilla made in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. These three people were very generous with their time and very patient with explaining what makes manzanilla special. Here you can see Nuria (Bodegas Delgado Zuleta – passionate employee), Rosario (Barbadillo – 6th generation family member) and Juan (Hidalgo – 7th generation family member). I’ll be writing much more about my bodega visits on the Azahar Travels blog, but I have to say my 36 hours in Sanlúcar were quite fruitful and very memorable. Also fun! Stay tuned…
