As always I ate very well in Málaga, visiting old favourite spots and trying out a couple of new ones. This was a fabulous feast we had on my last night in town, revisiting El Refectorium Catedral. Great food, wonderful wine, fun conversation with dear friends. And of course a couple “penultimas” afterwards. A lovely send off.

It was a night off from tapas tours, so of course I ended up hanging out in bars. Actually, it was mixing pleasure with business as I had to meet with a couple of bar owners, and then wanted to check out a newly opened place. Meanwhile I managed to get this cool shot at Las Teresas. I had never really noticed that hand-painted plate on the wall and to get closer to it I had to go behind the bar. Then Rafa bought us a round on the house and we chatted for another half hour or so. I love this bar, I love the people who run it, the guys who work there, and I’ve been going there for over 20 years. Just like with most of the bars I’ve ended up working with. It’s an amazing job when you don’t really notice when you’re working or when you’re just there socialising. Love my job.

Barbate Market
On the final day of my Vejer Getaway I got to fulfill two long desired wishes… to visit the market in Barbate and eat at El Campero (aka Tuna Heaven). Annie @cookinginspain very generously drove us down from Vejer and we spent a pleasant time in the market before heading over to El Campero for lunch. Which was spectacular. Two of those photos down there (top left and centre) actually belonged to our bar neighbours, who didn’t mind me snapping a couple of photos. But truly, the very best tuna Almadraba (morrillo and ventresca) I have ever tasted. It was a great afternoon and a perfect way to finish the getaway.

It was a great day. First all the Foodie Hub experts had a tapas tour in Málaga, visiting four amazing bars. After that we were whisked off to Marbella for the presentation of the first Essential Tapas Guide and the first annual awards for Best Tapa in Spain. And I was thrilled that one of my choices (the pringá montadito at Bodeguita Romero) won for best traditional tapa. Lots more to say about this, for now this is just a quick update.
