maria m

Maria M is back in town and yesterday we met up for lunch. Maria lived with me at the original Casa Azahar during the summer of 1999 and is here doing research at the Archivos de Indias (just like back in 1999). Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Anyhow, it was great to catch up but some of her memories of our time living together left me wondering if I was even there! This has happened before when meeting up again with ex-lodgers and I think it’s because for them their time in Sevilla was a distinct “time and place” part of their lives, whereas for me, well, I was just living here, and almost always in survival mode. Also, my memory sucks!

It was a lovely afternoon and fun to reminisce over a fabulous Sunday lunch at La Cayetana. Hopefully we’ll be able to get together again before she goes home.

on being an introvert

introvert

I never used to think I was an introvert. I mean, I know I was painfully shy as a child but put that down to the trauma of childhood abuse, etc. Later as a teen and young adult I still felt out of place in groups of people but also really liked being around people. In other words, I liked being social, I just didn’t know how to do it very well. Fast forward to present day and if you met me tomorrow you wouldn’t see any shyness or any sign of me being an introverted person. Unless you know.

And that’s the deal. I think this whole introvert-extrovert thing is one of the most misunderstood “labels” that we like to label people with. You know, just to know who you are dealing with and where you stand as a result of that “knowledge”. And we all do this, even if you think you don’t, at least when we first meet someone.

Thanks to our society – survival of the fittest and all that – extroverts have always been seen as the more successful types, with introverts seen as hiding away, not able to cope, etc. But in fact this is far from reality and there are (at least) four types of introverts according to MBmindfulness…

A Complete Guide To Introverts: The 4 Most Common Types And Signs

Me? I am the social introvert (as a child, totally the anxious introvert). Or who knows, maybe I’m a mix of both at this point, since these are just labels, or guidelines, for understanding yourself and others. My point is that trying to make people fit into a perceived notion of yours does both you and the other person a disservice. I am constantly seen as being this “strong capable woman” and that initially draws people to me (and, let’s face it, I’m also smart, intelligent and fun to be with – SO I AM TOLD). But often times it turns out that the people who only choose to see Smart & Fun Shawn get annoyed, upset, or even really angry when it turns out I’m actually a bit more complex than that.

And it always plays out like this. Once they realise they’ve “made a mistake” with befriending me they look for any comment or action to take the wrong way or out of context to justify them getting the hell out of Dodge, without a word, without an explanation, without any acknowledgement at all for the fact that, hey, the other day I was your friend, remember? I can’t help being an introvert, but I am the same person you met that very first time and I do the best with what I have going for me, but I am not here for your entertainment.  I’m actually a person.

sevilla, tapas, tapas tour

amy bill

Today I did two of my favourite things… met up in person (first time) with someone I’ve known on social media for years and went out on a Tasting Triana Tour. Amy has been a Facebook pal forever and so when she and her husband Bill made a return trip to Sevilla they decided to look me up. And omg what a fun and delicious time we had. In fact we were having so much fun that we went into overtime with a post-tour penúltima (or two) so that I ended up rolling home around 7 pm (we’d started at noon). Being younger than me (who isn’t??) they carried on. What can I say? Sometimes you just click with someone and – the most important thing of all – sense of humour in sync.

Anyhow, Amy and Bill, thank you for being amazing and for brightening my day. It was so great getting to know you both. Hope you’ll be back! xx

keep distance

It’s been that kind of week. Nothing to do with Covid (this time). Just that I seem to need reminders to keep my distance. It’s the way I can enjoy being with people without giving them the opportunity to hurt me. Because it almost never fails that whenever I slip into that false sense of security that someone actually likes me and that I can trust them… turns out that nope. I cannot.

lola rubia, ni ruido ni silencio, sevilla

lola

I’ve known Lola Rubia for many years and so I was happy to be invited to the book launch of her first novel, Ni Ruido Ni Silencio, which took place at La Carbonería. Look at that face! Lola was so happy and later said it was the best day of her life. I mean, what an accomplishment. On the way home with my signed copy I stopped off at a bar for a snack and the waitress asked about the book sitting on the table, read the back cover blurb and immediately wrote down the name saying she wanted to look it up. I think this bodes well. Best of luck, Lola!
