judiones, sevilla, tapas, tapas tours

judionesIt’s not often I get so excited about a new tapa at a bar, especially if it’s just going to be either a one-off or occasional daily special. But the other day while on a tapas tour I came across these judiones in the cold salads showcase at Las Teresas and knew I had to try them. Basically REALLY BIG white beans (these are Judioines de la Granja from Segovia), cooked until tender and then marinated in olive oil with garlic, and tossed with spring onion and jamón. HEAVEN.

azotea-2016Another menu tasting invitation this week – this time at the always fabulous La Azotea (I was invited to their Santa Cruz location, aka The Office). As I had a day off on Tuesday it seemed like a good opportunity to drop by and try some of the new dishes on their updated seasonal menu. As you can see… it was all delish.

  • Delicious amuse of ajo blanco with mango, mojama and basil oil
  • Avocado and tomato salad with pancetta, miso & pipirrana vinaigrette
  • Spiced roasted chicken salad with honey mustard vinaigrette
  • Ortiguilla (sea anemone) mousse with passion fruit chutney and seaweed mayo
  • Hake en papillote (wrapped & unveiled) with vegetables and lemon infused olive oil
  • Confit cod with black trumpet mushrooms and SOBRASADA POTATOES
  • Steak tartare with green apple slush and spicy herb mustard
  • Oxtail meatball with mushroom duxelles, cauliflower and carrot cream

los bermejales, sevilla, tapas, tapas bars

bermejaleandoLos Bermejales is a suburb about a half-hour’s bus ride from the centre. It’s not a place I go to often and, when I do, it’s usually to visit my friend Pilar (who lives there). But yesterday I decided to go and check out the final day of the first Tapeando por Los Bermejales, a week-long event in which 18 local bars created a special tapa and offered it at a special price (3€ for a tapa & drink).

Peter and I had chosen a few bars from the list, based on the tapa on offer, and were disappointed when we arrived at the first bar on the list and it was closed. Another of the bars wasn’t even there anymore, just a sign saying they had moved, though it didn’t say where. Two other bars had run out of the special tapa, and another two were so grubby we didn’t bother staying. So out of the nine bars we went to, we only ended up trying three tapas. Which were okay, but nothing “special”. In fact, in most cases the regular food looked more appealing. I think if you live in Los Bermejales it’s a fun initiative, with people going to the various bars during the week (though probably best not to go on a busy Sunday afternoon). Let’s see how they do next year.

canabotaCañabota

One of the perks of the biz is when I am invited to previews and openings of new bars and restaurants in Sevilla. I was excited to hear the other day that the long-awaited arrival of Cañabota will be realized this coming Monday (October 17th), and I was very lucky to be one of the guests at their fabulous preview lunch. Much more coming up very soon on Sevilla Tapas.

canabotaPreview tasting menu: “solid cocktail” of Hidalgo fino, Lustau vermouth with trout roe and orange zest; grilled oysters with toasted butter and artemia; onion crisp topped with larded tuna, onion purée and tuna fat; cod liver salad on mushroom slivers, baby spinach and lettuce, fish emulsion and spicy vinegar; squid ink potato parmentier with cuttlefish roe and chipirón; sea bass with confit black trumpet mushrooms and fish emulsion; lemon meringue “pie” on a crispy biscuit.

charlie-sam-1I first met Charlie & Sam @vinoveroleigh in London last August, when I was invited to a rooftop dinner at our mutual friend Oli’s place. So I was delighted to hear that they were going to Jerez for a few days and would be stopping by Sevilla on their way home. Being sherry lovers, well, I guess this was inevitable…charlie-sam-2Check out their great wine shop here… Vino Vero
