home stuff, ladder, tools

I feel so darned grown up – last Friday I bought me a 1.65 metre ladder! It’s kind of like when I bought my first drill. Not only was it something that I no longer had to go around borrowing from neighbours, but in fact neighbours started borrowing mine!

And well, my new next door neighbours, Colm & Lidia, have a ladder that I’ve borrowed on occasion. But it’s not a very tall ladder and my ceilings are 3.5 metres high. So when I saw this baby on special offer (it’s exactly this one, brand name Altipesa, but with three more rungs) I just had to have it.

It’s great. I can now change ceiling lightbulbs, remove curtains for washing, dust ceiling air vents, all that fun stuff. Oh, and while living here on my own I can now also close my livingroom curtains at night. Because they aren’t very slidy on the curtain rods they need to be pulled from high up. I need to find some “grabbers” for that job, but for now the ladder will do.

Lightweight and sturdy, my new ladder lives out on one of the balconies, out of (my) sight. I’m told that there is no problem leaving it out in The Weather, but I may look for another home for it. And that’s today’s news! What an exciting life I lead…

home stuff

russell at homeThere he is! My new toaster. Jessica and I went out together this evening as she was needed to pick up Spanish food things for her birthday picnic in Paris on Saturday and so we went and checked out the toaster section. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to go shopping with another chica.

Anyhow, I’ve always loved Russell Hobbs appliances but they are usually way too expensive for me. For some reason this cool matte silver darling was only 29€ so I thought – why the hell not? And suddenly I have way more counter top space again, which is a bonus. Plus it comes with a *ahem* bun warmer. Seriously. I had no idea what that gizmo on top was so Jessica and I were rifling through the instructions manual to find out. When I commented on how idiotic it was to have instruction manuals for toasters anyhow Jessica pointed out that they might say not to put aluminum foil on top of them to heat things up. Hmm…

So I think this one is a keeper. And Jessica is not allowed to make grilled cheese sandwiches in it.

cutely organised!

cards, maspapeles. sevilla, organiser

I was at my friend Maria’s fab paper & gift shop Maspapeles the other day for a visit, and on the way out saw this opaque plastic swirly card holder thingy hanging on the glass door. And well, I just had to have one! Is this not an fun way to organise your business cards (or photos, or postcards…)? I love how stylish it is and how it tones in with the wall – so much cooler than a corkboard. And so now I have lots of biz info at my finger tips and it’s also attractively displayed.

I just get such a kick out of well-designed useful things, don’t you?

computers, fnac, keyboard, logitech, mouse

Remember when my wireless laser mouse went all speedy gonzales on me? Well, I tried all the various things that people suggested, but it seemed that nothing helped. And it was driving me mental. So yesterday I stopped by FNAC to see if they had a cheap wireless mouse (Speedy cost almost 50€!!) and I saw this amazing offer. A nice Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse set for just 25€! And as I had a 10€ member’s voucher to spend I got it for just 15€. What a bargain. So now I have set Nog up with my old keyboard – he’s been using Sexy Beast since his old laptop died last year – and then thought to also try it out with Speedy. And wouldn’t you know it. The old wireless mouse seems to work just fine on Sexy Beast. Go figure.

Whatever. I now have a very cute and comfortable wireless keyboard and mouse that cost next to nothing, and which makes working online all day so much easier. And as Shadow only has three USB ports it’s much better to only have one in use for both. Now I just have to try and not buy that great looking multi-media Toshiba L655-1JV with a 4.5 hour battery that I saw while I was at FNAC…

I have a bbq!

bbq, food, summer, terraza

The deed is done … I have bought a BBQ.

I had wanted one with a lid, as friends told me that I would then be able to BBQ things like legs of lamb and whole chickens, but the store I went to this morning (long bus ride out to the burbs) mostly had the typical open style ones. At first I had my eye on this covered one, but not only was it expensive (110€) it seemed more like a BBQ oven, was kind of small, and you couldn’t adjust the grill height. Then I thought I wanted this one for 50€ because it had a nice cart attached to it, a grease catcher and air vent, and was on wheels. But no lid. In the end I went for the cheapest one on offer. It cost 15€, is basically a large metal bowl on a tripod, and will probably not last the summer. Or it may last ten years.

The reason for going with this very basic “starter model” was because it occurred to me that I have no idea if I’m going to end up even using the thing much. I mean, I love food cooked on the BBQ and I love the concept of cooking outdoors and enjoying meals up on the terraza. But how often will I actually do this? What with having to lug everything upstairs, then deal with all that messy charcoal and the even messier cleanup.

So I think it makes sense to spend this first summer with a terraza using a cheap basic model to discover what my BBQ habits will end up like. I mean, it’s going to do the job for simple things like meat, burgers, ribs, sausages, kebabs, etc. If I find it lacking then I’ll look for something better either next year or during the summer sales.

Also, because it only cost 15€ I could also get a new microwave (49€) and an extra fan (needed for the small bedroom), all of which will be delivered tomorrow morning. Along with a big bag of charcoal. I’m thinking the first BBQ will be on Sunday – join me?
