Back in February when I thought I was literally flushing money down the toilet I made a few changes in order to save water, but the water bill kept coming in very high and also saying that nobody lived here and that those 0 inhabitants were using more than 300 litres of water a day (!!!).

So I spoke to my next door neighbour about his water bill and it turned out they were paying half the amount I was – and they have a baby! So I finally went down to the Emasesa office to ask what the heck was going on and they told me that I had to “empadronar” (not sure what this is in English, basically you register how many people are living in your house at a government office) and bring that certificate to the office in order to change the rate. Because apparently the rate you pay is less when more people live in your house.

And so I did all this and the next water bill, which arrived yesterday, was a little more than half the amount of the previous one.

Great, you say? Well, yes. But, why didn’t Emasesa tell me about the empadronamiento certificate when I first went to their office in February to change the name on the water bill – a “service” for which they charged a whopping 78.50€? I mean, wtf. They obviously saw that my place was listed as having no inhabitants and knew about the crazy rate I’d be paying. And if I hadn’t spoken to my neighbour I’d never have known that my water bill was off because every other place I’ve lived in Spain had the water included in the rent.

In other news, my old friends at Movistar are now suing me because I didn’t pay their final – INCORRECT – bills in which they charged me for service when I didn’t have any and, after several phone calls from me (I’ll never get that time back), wouldn’t send me corrected ones. Bastards.

And now I am off to enjoy a birthday lunch with Pilar and forget all this crap for awhile.

I’ve mentioned the Tunas here before, but can’t find where now. They are usually university students and each different faculty (medicine, law, engineering etc) has its own group of wandering minstrals who dress up and play traditional songs, usually to make a bit of beer money and pick up girls. Though I remember once in Salamanca seeing a group of Tunas below a balcony serenading an 80-year-old woman, which remains in my mind as one of the most endearing things I have ever seen.

For the past week or so I’ve been seeing all sorts of Tunas wandering around, and many a bit long in the tooth to be university students. So I finally stopped and asked what was going on and it turns out there is an international Tuna competition going on here. Tonight I saw a group from Mexico! But this group in the video are from nearby Granada.

I do love the Tunas…

tapeo extremo II

So this is what I did yesterday! Met up with some Twitter pals and fellow bloggers for a Tapeo Extremo, a term coined by travel writing legend and hardcore tapeo phenomenon Annie Bennett. Taking part were Fiona (Scribbler in Seville), Kate (Tales of a Brit Abroad), Kate’s friend Nicki, and Kim (Becoming Sevillana). I’ve known Fiona for quite awhile now, and Kate and Nicki had been on a tapas tour with me last summer, but it was the first time meeting Kim. Everyone knew that this was going to be pretty darn demanding and they had a lot to live up to if they were going to reach “extremo” standards. And well, the girls did good.

MY challenge was that nobody in the group ate meat, and one only tolerated fish in small amounts, so it had to be a pescatarian/vegetarian affair. Was I daunted? Hell no. Though it has to be said that the tour focused more on fish and seafood until the fourth and final tapas stop. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

Today’s Photohunt theme is “light”.

Every night for about ten minutes the light is such that the sky turns this most amazing cobalt blue. I love it.

autumn, sevilla, shoes, spain, weather

Forget equinoxes and time changes, for me autumn doesn’t officially arrive until the first day I have to put on shoes. Which was today. Had to go out to the hospital this morning for the monthly chemo port cleaning and, while the heavy overnight rain had stopped, it was still a bit blustery and coolish. Dammit. I didn’t need to wear a jacket, but bare legs and mostly bare feet seemed like pushing it, so out came the dreaded tights and the (very dusty) purple shoes.

Not bad, I guess, but some years I’ve managed to keep wearing sandals until the last week of November. Basically it depends on if it rains.

Anyhow, I got a taxi over to the hospital. It’s different since they changed the port cleaning location – I used to go to the chemo infusion room in the evenings when they weren’t so busy and now I go to the blood lab building between 12-1pm. It’s actually a bit better not having to go to the chemo room, but it’s still a monthly reminder of THE CANCER and that the reason I have to keep this port in for five years is that they expect that I’m going to need it again…

But not today. There were two nurses on duty when I walked in and they immediately asked why I was dressed totally in black. I said I wasn’t, that I was wearing purple shoes and red earrings, but that didn’t satisfy them. Then I realised they must have thought I was in mourning, so I told them I was mourning the sun. Cracked them up. And they also relaxed, no longer worried I was a recent widow on top of having a chemo port in my chest.

So now that it’s autumn (it’s not officially winter until the Christmas lights are turned on) I need to go through my pathetic array of “warm clothing” and see what I can pull together. Even though it actually got up to 20º this afternoon. But I don’t want to buy anything new until I lose another ten kilos…

How’s the weather where you are?
