The last time I saw Kate was when we bumped into each other last year at Vinoble in Jerez, and prior to that was the time she came for a visit in October 2013, which was the first time we’d seen each other in over 20 years, since our days working together in Bristol. So when I heard Kate would be passing through Sevilla one a 3-day press visit to Sanlúcar de Barrameda we checked her (jam-packed) itinerary for a possible moment when we could meet up. Which almost didn’t happen as they got to Sevilla an hour or so later than planned and still had to visit the feria and, after my night out with Barbara, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be up for meeting up late in the evening.

So after a bit of frantic texting it looked like it wasn’t going to work out as Kate didn’t think she’d be back at her hotel until after 10 pm, and so I got into PJs and settled in for an evening of netflixing with the cats. Then another message came through – “I’m in a taxi heading for the centre!” – and so we arranged for the driver to drop her in my ‘hood, I threw on some clothes, raced over to the Plaza Alfalfa, and suddenly there were big hugs all round. We popped into a couple bars, more for some wine and chat since neither of us was very hungry. Good thing too because the food wasn’t really up to scratch where we ended up. But it didn’t matter because the wine was good and the company even better. Once again we discussed the idea for a Málaga Getaway including other friends from Bristol and London, possibly in September. I think that would be fabulous.

fiona kateAKA beer-drinking blondes from Bristol basking in the sun

I was happy to finally meet UK food & wine writer Fiona Beckett @food_writer at Vinoble the other day. She just happened to be standing behind me waiting for a tasting to start (I was buying an It’s Sherry Time button…) and I recognised her from her Twitter pic. So I said hola and introduced myself, mentioning that we had some friends in common from my Bristol days, one of them being Kate Hawkings @katehawkings, who I last saw back in October 2013 when she came to Sevilla for a visit. Which was actually the first time we’d seen each other since we worked together at the infamous Rocinantes tapas bar back in 1992.

Anyhow, the next day I ran into Fiona again as she was leaving the Vinoble site with a tiny blonde woman who looked remarkably like Kate. Turned out because it WAS Kate! What a lovely surprise. So we all went off for a beer break in the sun because sometimes you can actually have too much of a good thing (sherry). Later that evening we went for a cosy tapas dinner and had a fab time. I was even thinking of staying another day in Jerez so I could see a bit more of Kate (Fiona had to leave early the next day) but the visiting UK group had such a jam-packed itinerary that getting together again wouldn’t have been possible. So it was back home to cats and my own bed. But how wonderful to meet up with an old friend and also meet a new one. Plans are afoot for another meet up either in Sevilla or Málaga… #TapeoExtremo. Or maybe even in Bristol. You never know.

Had a lovely Sunday in Bristol with Lizzie. We got up quite late and then enjoyed some coffee before heading out to The Maul and M&S where I stocked up on the basics. Then we took a nice car tour through town and I got to see my old hood and lots of familiar places, and ended up at the waterfront to have lunch and – I was assured – the very best chips in Bristol, at the River Station. And they truly were amazing. Later on we took a walk over to the Avon Gorge Hotel hoping to see the sun set behind the Clifton Bridge, but clouds rolled in and so we headed home for cava and snacks.

This morning I am off to pick up a prezzie for Nog and to visit Lizzie’s Folk House Cafe (can’t wait!), before packing up and getting on the train to Paddington, and then making my way to Heathrow to fly home again. I’ve had a wonderful time –  especially meeting with friends old and new – and I hope you’ve enjoyed me sharing my trip with you.

Yesterday I said goodbye to Clare & Joe and their pretty Hackney flat where they really made me feel like home. But before heading off to Bristol, Sara & Steve took me out for my first ever Vietnamese meal – it was amazing! Then they even came with me to Paddington and saw me off so I could be there in plenty of time without worrying about missing my train, and so I wouldn’t be there alone. We had one final drink and chat at a bar there and then I headed out to Bristol, where Lizzie picked me up at the station and took me to her very comfortable house. A couple of old friends were there for a quick visit before heading back to London, so we all had dinner together. Then Lizzie and I sat up drinking wine and chatting until well past midnight. Today we are planning a trip out to the HUGE Marks & Spencer here, but other than that I am happy not to have to plan anything or be anywhere at any specific time … just happy to be here. Haven’t seen Lizzie since the summer of 2001 and it feels like no time has passed at all. It’s so nice to have these couple of days to just relax and catch up before heading back to Sevilla.
