christmas, friends, Malaga, malaga getaway, trips

beerI’m here! Arrived in Málaga at midday, caught a taxi to Thane’s place and, after dropping off my bags, headed over to the central market for a light seafood lunch (by this time it was 3 pm!). Then I did a bit of supermarket shopping (water, coffee, juice, paper products, stuff like that) and went back to the apartment to properly unpack and set up the laptop.

sterling

This trip I brought Sterling instead of Anchoa because I have a lot of work to do this week and all my photos, files, etc are on the bigger laptop. One of the perks of travelling by train is not having to worry about baggage weight, because my suitcase weighed a TON.

After that I just did a bit of wandering before heading back home for an early night. Today was all about just settling in. Tomorrow I’ll start with the usual Málaga friend frenzy…

birthdays, friends, pilar, sherry, tapas, vineria san telmo

pili-1So okay, it was almost a month late (through no real fault of either myself or Pilar) but better late than never. Today we finally managed to get together for lunch and celebrate Pilar’s birthday, which has become a bit of a tradition over the years.

This time we went to the always fabulous Vineria San Telmo and, not only was Pilar sung to by the staff when her candle lit birthday, erm, pie arrived, another client came over to us and said it was HIS birthday too, and gave Pilar a kiss. Great food and wine (including sherry), cosy ambiance… a lovely afternoon with a lovely friend.

christmas, friends, sevilla, tapas, we love tapas, work

wlt-christmas-16Getting the We Love Tapas team all together at once can be a bit like herding cats, which isn’t really surprising when talking about four (including me) busy free-lancers. But we finally managed to find a few hours for a nice pre-Christmas lunch to catch up and connect. First we did a little Tapas Research, trying out a new bar (with mixed results) and then ended up for a “dessert” course of cheese and sherry at Palo Cortao. Good times.

arte-cozina-gangGood times in Antequera with @welovemalaga @svqconcierge @tomatours @thaneprince @larosillacomida. This was the highlight of our very RAINY weekend, meeting up at @artedecozina on Sunday afternoon for Charo Carmona’s La Cozina en Tiempos de Cervantes, recreating dishes from the book of Francisco Martinez Montiño, chef to Felipe III (circa 1611), and paired with local Málaga wines.

We were also thrilled to find out that Charo had just received her first Guia Repsol sun (Spanish equivalent to a Michelin star). Well deserved.

menu-cervantesThe Menu…

  • garbanzo cream
  • fried cod skin
  • aubergine with honey and spices
  • cardoon pastel
  • retinto beef “scotch egg” with quail egg
  • podrida stew
  • tuna and egg omelette
  • pigeon in mandarine sauce
  • almond quesadilla
  • sugar melindre with apple
  • chocolate “lecture”
  • vintage muscat 2015 (white)
  • igualado 2016 (red)

sylvieI first met Sylvie @sylviebigar in the spring of 2011. She got in touch telling me she was a food and travel writer from NYC, and that while in town with her family, she wanted to “escape” with me one evening on a tapas tour. So off we went on a special private tour for one, which ended up with us taxiing over to a unique place out on the inner road. Lots of fun. A couple of years later I briefly met up with her in Jerez while she was on assignment there, and we had a very quick “catch up”. Then I found out that Sylvie was going to be back in Andalucía this week, and that she had purposely taken an extra couple of days in Sevilla so we could hang out.

Hang out = tapear.

We spent two fun evenings together, visiting tapas bars and talking, talking, talking. Good times! Which we hope to repeat soon.
