Exactly 4 weeks today I’ll be winging my way back to London. Remembering some great times from last summer’s London Getaway. Can’t wait to see everyone (and London) again.

So guess who has been invited to be a judge at a major sherry event in London? I’ll give you a hint. It’s the same person who is now a complete nervous wreck (but in a good way?). I’ve done judging events before, but this is BIG TIME. Will be spending the entire of March boning up on, well, everything. Eek!

I was so excited to find the recipe for chef Shaun Searley’s amazing confit potatoes (pictured below at the amazing Quality Chop House in London) and decided to include them in my Christmas Eve dinner. Well, they ended up taking all of Friday evening to prepare, with slicing and layering and slow baking for three hours (!!). The final frying happens just before serving. I hope they turn out, but just in case I’ll have some back-up roasties. What are you making for Christmas dinner?

So while on holiday back in August I was on my usual number 15 London bus heading into town and had secured the front seat on the upper deck (yay!). Getting close to my stop the bus was stopped at a red light, so I thought this was a good time to make my way downstairs. Then, as soon as I was at the top of the stairs the bus took off again and down I went! My right hand automatically shot out to break my fall and smashed against the railing. In the end I only stumbled down a couple of stairs, but the damage was done. Hand immediately started hurting like a sumbitch.
Next day I met my friend Thane for lunch. She took one look at my hand and told me to take my ring off immediately before the swelling got so bad I’d have to get it sawed off. Which turned out to be very good advice. And well, since then, it really hasn’t been getting any better. So I finally went to have it x-rayed and it seems like nothing is broken. But the space between my pinky and ring finger is still very tender and swollen (almost two months later), which can’t be right. Someone suggested I get an MRI done, since x-rays don’t often show the whole picture. My doctor says I should keep icing it and STOP USING IT (or at least as much as possible). Really not sure what to do at this point.

My last day in London and I’d made plans with Fiona Becket @food_writer to meet her for a last lunch in town at a restaurant she was reviewing. That was before I realised that my flight was at 5.30 (not 6.30 – Spanish time!) which wouldn’t leave enough time. Then I was chatting with Sam at @FoodieHub who said that Vicky @amsterdamfoodie was also in town and we could squeeze in a “quick bite” at Box Park, just around the corner from Liverpool Street Station, where I had to get the train to the airport. Done.

As you can see, it was more than your usual quick bite (though to be honest, they took more than half of it back to the office). But it was quick. In less than an hour I was back at Liverpool Street Station with ten minutes to spare before my train.

Stansted check-in and security was a hot and tiresome hour and a half, so I was in need of a Cold Beer after that, while I waited to board my plane home.

And before I knew it I was flying over Sevilla, almost home. It was an amazing, if exhausting, 10 days. I’m so thankful for all the friends who came together to meet up with me, and also grateful to Jo & Mark who let me stay at their apartment (otherwise 10 days in London would never have been possible). I’ve got so many nice memories, and even more photos. Next stop… Madrid!
