I was in one of my favourite tapas bars today and heard my waiter pal Jesús say to a couple of customers… “if you wait by the bar I will service you soon”. Oops. And yes, I set him straight, and boy was he embarrassed. Was going to send him a whatsapp with a written reminder but don’t know how to properly translate “to service” into Spanish. 🙂

First day of the year and celebrating with my first mince pie of the holiday season! Better late than never (and great for breakfast). Thanks to Lucy @sparkybakewell for bringing some back from the UK for me.

I just read about a town in Galicia called Vilagarcía that celebrates NYE at 12.00 noon on the 31st of December, rather than wait until midnight. They do the whole shebang, with a countdown and eating the 12 lucky grapes, but at a much more sensible hour. Me, I’ve been doing this for years (without the grapes). I prefer going out to celebrate during the afternoon, usually having a lovely lunch with a friend, drinking cava, etc, so that by New Year’s Eve I am back at home in pyjamas with the cats, watching movies and chatting with friends around the globe on whatsapp.
This time lunch was with Lucy @sparkybakewell, and we had a fabulous time. What do you like doing on New Year’s Eve?

Another impromptu celebration, this time the day before New Year’s Eve. Claudia & Paul had met my darling boy Esteban @vermuteriayosoytupadre the week before at newly opened La Casa del Tigre, but they had not yet visited his fabulous vermutería. So that’s how a quick stop for a vermouth ended up segueing into lunch there and later on closing up and having dinner at La Antigua Abacería de San Lorenzo. Good times!

Every now and then clients turn into friends. This happened most recently during a Tasting Triana Tour with Edye, her husband Steven and their two daughters (aka The Blondes). Well, Steven is an honourary blonde. Anyhow, we started off as usual with a walk through Triana Market and stopping for jamón, cheese and manzanilla sherry. Then it was off to three other bars. And well, we just hit it off and everyone had such a great time. They even totally loved the fried quails, the presentation of which sometimes put people off (see below) but in fact they are delicious. By the end of the tour it was hugs all around and we continued to “chat” by text message while they were in Córdoba. Really hope they will be back.
