This week’s Substack offering is a visit to eight (count em… 8!) food markets in Sevilla. I also hit 200 subscribers this week (!!!) which is quite exciting and I think not bad for an almost three-month-old newsletter. So if you like what you read (and would like to make me happy 🙂) please consider becoming either a free or paid subscriber. And leave a comment!

dodging the rain drops

What a week. I had so much research planned for my next Substack article on local markets, which meant visiting some further-out markets I hadn’t been to for a while, plus one I have never visited. BUT the forecast was (and still is) for pretty much non-stop rain for at least the next ten days or so. And as we all know, walking with crutches AND an umbrella is basically impossible.

But… it’s turned out that other than on Wednesday the rain has mostly been happening from mid-late afternoon until morning, leaving midday free for me to get out there. And so I have been, wielding my old lady bus pass (I’m really getting to know the bus routes around here). Just a couple more markets to visit to finish up. Here’s a pic of the clouds heading back in as I hobbled home today.

So I’ve had a couple of guest writers on my Substack (HAVE I MENTIONED I HAVE A SUBSTACK???) such as Paul writing about Jazz in Sevilla and Alexis giving us tips on how to buy olive oil in Sevilla, but this is the first time I’ve done a full-on collab. And of course it had to be with my pal Jeffrey XtremeFoodies, who is also my substack twin (we started there at the same time). The topic, as you can see, is Tapas vs Pintxos.

Jeffrey was Team Pintxo (San Sebastián) and I was Team Tapas (Sevilla) and it was, as they say, an EXPERIENCE. We are both really pleased with the end result and we also learned a lot along the way. And I think we also got to know each other a bit better, always nice. So there will be more collabs in the future, but for now please enjoy this one. And don’t forget to give it a Like, or even a Share, and if you really liked it please consider becoming a (free or paid) subscriber…

Another Substack guest post this week on Bitesize Sevilla. This one is by my friend Alexis Kerner, olive oil expert extraordinaire and international olive oil competition juror. I’m so happy she was willing to help answer the not so simple question I am asked on almost every tapas tour… where can I buy some nice olive oil to take home? Her tips and info apply for places outside Sevilla too.

Have a look! And if you like what you see please consider becoming a free subscriber (if you REALLY like it you might want to become a paid one).

radish fever

Jeffrey was in town over the weekend and on Saturday he invited me out for THIS AMAZING LUNCH at La Carmela. But before that we had to stop in at Las Golondrinas so Jeffrey could get his radish fix. This is a guy who regularly eats out at Michelin starred restaurants, as well as having his own place in Marbella called Andala, so it’s kind of cute how giddy he gets about these radishes. But they really are simply spectacular.

Somehow we both ended up starting on Substack at the same time last month and it’s actually been quite fun and helpful having a Substack buddy. We give each other encouragement and – really important at the beginning – helped each other figure out how the damn site worked (many whatsapp chats and calls). It’s quite a steep learning curve but works great once you get the hang of it. Anyhow, here are links to both our publications so go have a look and, if you like what you see, please consider subscribing for free, and if you REALLY like what you see you can opt to become a paid subscriber.
