So I can’t figure out if this is meant to be a global unifying message or if the people who put this together really think Antarctic Emperor penguins live with Arctic Eskimos.

It was almost exactly two years ago when Victor and I last visited Janet Mendel in Mijas, so another day trip to that pretty village (and Janet!) was in order. We left Málaga at midday under mostly sunny skies but shortly after meeting up with Janet the skies opened up and we took shelter – where else? – in the nearest bar.
Actually this segued into a three-stop tapeo, led by Janet, dodging the raindrops along the way. We weren’t so lucky at our last stop however, when as soon as we were ready to leave THIS happened…
But our hero Victor borrowed an umbrella from the bar (ours were all at home – duh) and went to collect the car, and on the way home we were rewarded with a spectacular rainbow.
It was great spending the afternoon catching up with Janet (thanks so much for taking me Victor!) and hope we can all get together again soon. Perhaps in Córdoba?
birthday lunch with pilar

So okay, it was almost a month late (through no real fault of either myself or Pilar) but better late than never. Today we finally managed to get together for lunch and celebrate Pilar’s birthday, which has become a bit of a tradition over the years.
This time we went to the always fabulous Vineria San Telmo and, not only was Pilar sung to by the staff when her candle lit birthday, erm, pie arrived, another client came over to us and said it was HIS birthday too, and gave Pilar a kiss. Great food and wine (including sherry), cosy ambiance… a lovely afternoon with a lovely friend.

There’s a new wine shop in town, very dangerously located about a three-minute walk from my house. Welcome Lama La Uva and its founder Ana Linares, whose idea is to help us reach all the good grapes (unlike the fox from the fable), so no sour grapes for us.
I was invited to the opening this week and went along with @SVQconcierge and @JetslikeTaxis. It’s a small attractive space, with the shop downstairs and the tasting room above on a mezzanine. Along with the wines you can also purchase quality food items, and there will also be some wines available to try before you buy. Have to say that Plaza Regina is fast becoming one of the hippest places in town.
sagardi jornadas del buey

So THIS happened on Monday. Actually, it’s the second time I’ve been invited to this very meaty event, put on by Grupo Sagardi, experts in Basque country cooking. The Sevilla branch of Sagardi is located in the lovely Hotel Palacio Pinello, just up the road from me. As you can see, it was quite the feast, featuring massive t-bones from 10-year-old Galician oxen that had been aged for about 25 days and then grilled over oak. Aside from the MEAT my favourite dish was the simple char-roasted piquillo peppers, which were lovely smoky-sweet, but really it was all excellent (though I didn’t have any chocolate truffles). No need for dinner that night!
The menu (90€ per person including wine – a very nice Argentinian Malbec) is on offer at Sagardi’s until December 11th, and due to the massive size of the txuletón, they recommend booking in groups of 4.
