sevilla, sherry, tapas

I met Katie & Paul back in 2023 when Katie (a twitter/insta pal) looked me up while they were in town and we spent a lovely sherry-filled afternoon together. Since then we have been doing twice-yearly Bowland & Bay Sevilla Getaways together and this week they were back for more.

Katie runs her adventure food company Bowland & Bay out of Lancashire UK  and offers fab foodie experiences both locally and abroad. I love that she also always brings me great groups of fun and inquisitive people from all walks of life. Also really nice to work with someone who shares the same values. Can’t wait to see them again, hopefully in October.

Yep, he’s 73 now. We actually did Birthday Lunch at Salpicón and a visit to the Alcázar yesterday, final chance to see the Sorolla exhibit, but today (instead of cake) Peter got the now “traditional” arabic baklava, these ones from my friend Fourat’s fabulous Beirutina. Happy Birthday Peter! 🥳

cafeteria donald, sevilla, tapas

Today my friend and neighbour Mariano Gárcia received the Cucharón de Plata (Silver Ladle) award for his “exemplary career and a lifetime dedicated to the hospitality industry”.  It was a very moving ceremony and, typically, Mariano dedicated his award to his family, co-workers and customers…

I have not been, nor am I by any means, the sole author or deserving recipient of this distinction, which, thanks to the prestige of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rural Savings Bank, and the City Council in the person of its Mayor, fills me with satisfaction and pride. Of Cafetería Donald, of Restaurante Donald, of La Hermandad, I am only a co-author, and I say ‘co’ because you have also been, and will be, my wife, my daughters, my parents, my mentor Manolo Ávila, my fellow members of so many beloved brotherhoods, my people in the world of bullfighting, my friends, my gatherings, and everyone else. Without you, Donald would be a ‘simple’ bar and not a home for all those I just named.

More on Mariano and Cafetería Donald coming soon on Bitesize Sevilla.

sevilla, we love tapas

Since I first started We Love Tapas back in 2015 it’s gone through a few different phases, but has basically been hibernating since June 2023 when lovely Nell went off to study in France and yet another guide got poached. I just didn’t have the fight in me to keep starting over, and I was still very busy with Sevilla Tapas. But now… here we go again! I’ve teamed up with a friend who is full of positive energy and fresh ideas and by next month we hope to have the website revamped and our new offers available. And that’s all I’m going to tell you for now, other than we are both very excited. Watch this space! And give us a follow on our socials…

WE LOVE TAPAS

I managed to squeeze in one more Birthday Lunch on Saturday, making a grand total of seven in all. Not bad! Paul had been in (and around) town over the past week with his daughter Molly and her husband Alex, also visiting Cádiz and Jerez. It was starting to look like I wouldn’t see them due to weather travel disruptions, etc but then on their last day we found time to meet up for a quick lunch at El Manijero (and also so Paul could pick up his L’Armanaque) before they caught their bus to Málaga. And so now that January is over that’s definitely all the birthday fun until next year.
