canabotaCañabota

One of the perks of the biz is when I am invited to previews and openings of new bars and restaurants in Sevilla. I was excited to hear the other day that the long-awaited arrival of Cañabota will be realized this coming Monday (October 17th), and I was very lucky to be one of the guests at their fabulous preview lunch. Much more coming up very soon on Sevilla Tapas.

canabotaPreview tasting menu: “solid cocktail” of Hidalgo fino, Lustau vermouth with trout roe and orange zest; grilled oysters with toasted butter and artemia; onion crisp topped with larded tuna, onion purée and tuna fat; cod liver salad on mushroom slivers, baby spinach and lettuce, fish emulsion and spicy vinegar; squid ink potato parmentier with cuttlefish roe and chipirón; sea bass with confit black trumpet mushrooms and fish emulsion; lemon meringue “pie” on a crispy biscuit.

jm and reyes

Believe it or not, these are two friends that I didn’t meet on Twitter! Juan Manuel and Reyes are the heart and soul of the Vineria San Telmo, one of my favourite tapas bars in Sevilla. And well, that’s how I first met Juan, by being a regular customer. Later when I started my Sevilla Tapas Tours the Vineria became one of the stops (depending on the tour) and we began working together too. Then Reyes, who for years had been responsible for the amazing Vineria desserts, opened her own storefront bakery Gollerías, now my “go to” place if I ever need a cake for a special event. Anyhow, ran into them both at the Vineria the other day and took this photo. Seriously two of the nicest people you could ever meet and I’m very lucky to be able to call them my friends.  🙂

Saw this on Twitter the other day. Love it!
If you’ve ever waited on tables, you know how these people feel.

Denmark’s Noma won first place for the third year in a row at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, which took place in London the other night. Three Spanish restaurants made the top 10: El Celler de San Roca, Mugaritz and Arzak.

jaded, life, restaurants, tapas, work

After five years of running the Sevilla Tapas blog and more than two years doing the Tapas Tours, I’ve been wondering lately if I might be getting a bit jaded.

Sure, a plate of perfectly sliced jamón Ibérico de bellota is still an exquisite thing of beauty to me, and I continue to enjoy trying new places and dishes, but more often than not these days I end up feeling a bit let down. Could it be me?

NAAAH! It’s them! Seriously, I am getting so sick and tired of tapas bars that open up out of nowhere and think that just because they have light fixtures made out of coat hangers or bring your cutlery to the table in a Hello Kitty pencil case that this somehow allows them to charge you outrageous prices for ordinary food (the 5€ tapa is becoming the norm in such places), and then add a mysterious “cubierto” charge that can include anything from bread to napkins to who knows what. In spite of the economic crisis here, new tapas bars seem to be opening every week and most of the new ones are trying to “out cute” each other, focusing more on style than substance.

Very glad now that I changed my reviewing policy back in January as it seems that more than ever people should be warned about these places. Frankly, there are very few (maybe two) tapas bars in Seville that can get away with charging 5€ for a tapa. The rest are just bullshit. And it’s spoiling what going out for a tapa is really all about. It’s about meeting friends, or even just going out for a quick bite on your own, knowing you’ll get a nice snack and a drink that is more often than not cheaper than what you could have whipped up at home.

Is this sort of pretentious dining trend happening where you live too?
