This seems to be my week for meeting charming elderly gentlemen. I went to update my review of Bodega San Lorenzo after hearing that it was under new management. Happily the interior of this venerable bar, founded in 1864, has remained visually the same after a bit of sprucing up (and nice new bathrooms!), along with a few changes to the menu, notably a more complete wine list.
Anyhow, while I was there waiting for my friend Lucy to join me I took some photos and ended up talking with Juan Antonio, who was enjoying a midday vermouth while reading his paper.Β In a very short while I learned that he is 78 (his birthday was two days ago), has lived in the barrio for 25 years, lives alone but has a daughter who looks in on him daily, and we also touched on other topics such as exchanging birthday gifts El Corte InglΓ©s, compression socks, knees (his are much better now, mine not so much), to mention a few. Such a lovely man!
When Lucy arrived we tried a couple of snacky things before heading to our main lunch spot, but I will definitely be back to San Lorenzo to sample more of the menu. Around midday, so that I might run into Juan Antonio again. π

This is seriously my favourite plating of a tapa in Sevilla, and I mean that sincerely. Simply for the not giving even one fuck attitude. It is what it is (a delicious marinated deep-fried quail), totally no frills and about as far away from pretentious as you can get. No sauce swooshes, no micro herbs tweezered on top (and they don’t charge for the bread). This is Casa Ruperto, a classic bar in Triana that has been serving up the best damn fried quail since the 60s, quickly and efficiently and with a smile. Basically an antidote to wanky gastrobars, to be taken whenever it feels necessary. You can also visit it on my Tasting Triana Tour.

The other night I was at Casa Morales on a Sevilla Tapas Tour and I spotted these guys at a table near us. I told my clients that I would love to sneak a photo of them, they were just such a lovely and charismatic group. And then one of them came over and asked if I would take their photo, so I said I would if I could also take one for me. Score! Though you can see that I really do need that new iPhone 11 Pro with its fab wide angle lens (I was against the wall here and couldn’t back up any further). Β π

Since our Sevilla Tapas Tour last week Miranda @mjb_edinburgh has been playing Name That Bar, sending me pics of tapas from bars around town. She almost stumped me today because l never order ensaladilla… but then l recognised the placemat! It was El Disparate. The Queen of Tapas strikes again.Β π
