coruna (1)My first day trip with Anna and Jorge The KilomEATers was to A Coruña, a lovely coastal town about 45 minutes (by car) north of Santiago de Compostela. We started off by visiting the central market, which is renowned for its fish and seafood. After that we drove over to the second “old centre” by the port, and thus began an amazing culinary adventure.coruna (2)

Our first stop was Taberna Arallo, very recently opened in the Plaza Mayor, and run by the same group in charge of Michelin starred Alborada. To me the décor and general ambiance felt a bit “prefab cool”, complete with the now de rigueur long communal table and open kitchen, and smooth jazz Spotify on the sound system. Luckily we were there at opening time (no reservations taken) and got a spot at the end of the table that felt a bit more “private”.

Here we sampled just three dishes (we were saving ourselves as we knew we had at least two other places to go). The volandeiras in hot & sour sauce were spectacular, and the “nigiri” croquetas topped with salted hake were also very good. But the “flamenking” filled with zorza and potato, while tasty, came with a rather pointless sweet chilli sauce. In general it was a pleasant, if pricey, experience.

coruna (5)

Next up was Pulpeira de Melide for their renowned pulpo a feira with potatoes boiled in the same water as the octopus. I thought it was delicious, though Anna and Jorge both insisted they’d had better pulpo there on previous occasions.

coruna (3)

Last but not least was a visit to Boca Negra. I’d heard good things about this place and, upon arrival, we were greeted by chef and owner Pablo Pizarro who arranged a special tasting menu for us. The food and service here were excellent – definitely a “must” when you are in Coruña.

  • Saam: pancetta with mussel, sriracha, shiitake, tartare sauce
  • Cauliflower foam with green curry and mussels
  • Dumpling of zambariñas a la Gallega
  • Jurel (horse mackerel) in palo cortado
  • Bonito tartare with spicy ají sauce
  • Secreto Ibérico empanada with curry, spicy housemade ketchup on the side
  • Marinated and grilled chicken thighs with peanuts, cilantro, chilli, pineapple
  • Dessert: Gin & tonic strawberry ice cream with pink peppercorn

coruna (4)A Coruña struck me as a city of contrasts. Great natural beauty and wonderful turn of the (20th) century architecture at times clashing with patches of modernist wasteland. Though overall it’s an attractive place and well worth visiting. I was grateful to have my two very knowledgeable friends as guides, which definitely helped me get the most of my few hours in town.

katie parla (1)I continue to meet wonderful people thanks to Twitter. This time it was Rome-based food goddess Katie Parla. On Friday morning I was doing my usual social media stuff and attempting to catch up with my massive To Do list of reviews, photos and blog posts before the big #LondonGetaway next week, and up popped a Twitter notice from @jengonroff suggesting that @katieparla get in touch with me. I’d heard of Katie and was keen to help out, thinking she might be coming to Sevilla soon. Turned out she was in Sevilla in that exact moment and was STARVING, so we made plans to meet up later in the evening. What followed was a fun (and sherry-filled) impromptu Sevilla Tapas Tour...

katie parla (2)I immediately felt at home with Katie and was pleased to discover we share a similar philosophy when it comes to our food & wine tours (Katie also offers Art History & Archeology tours in Rome), which is to keep it simple and real. We’ve both noticed the recent influx of food tour opportunists showing up where we have lived and loved and worked for so long. It’s sad to see these people ruining what we have helped to build with them scheduling regular touristy-scripted tours that clog up and destroy the natural ambiance of the places we love. Progress? I don’t think so.

But we had a great time, starting off with sherry and jamón at Las Teresas, then moving on for some fusiony-fun at La Azotea in barrio Santa Cruz (with unexpected guest appearance by Ania – see silly selfie). Then a quick stop at Casa Morales – Katie had to see the tinajas! – before finishing up at Bodeguita Romero. And finish up we did, closing the joint sometime just before 1.00 am! Loved watching Katie experience her first pringá, and we were totally spoiled by Alejandro, offering special sherry pairings. Pretty much a perfect night out.

It’s always such a pleasure to meed kindred spirits like Katie and I look forward to visiting her in Rome soon.

Don’t get me wrong… I love helping people. And I love sharing my knowledge about Spain. Which is what led to the labour of love that is Sevilla Tapas and its various offshoots. Which then led to me offering food & wine tours, and later on personalised travel planning. Meanwhile, I keep updating my websites as best I can, as time (and money) allows, so that others can also enjoy and benefit from my experiences.

But what I don’t get are the people who email me saying what a nice website I have and then ask me to recommend specific tapas bars for their short stay in Sevilla, or hotels that would suit their particular requirements, local sights they shouldn’t miss, or possible day trips they should take while they are here, etc…

Guys! All that info is there. It has always been there. It’s there for you to use and – I hope – will be useful. Happy to share and all that. But please don’t ask me to take time out of my busy day to organise your holiday with “my favourite picks” based on your special needs… you can actually find that out yourselves by spending some time on my sites. I did all that research so you wouldn’t have to start from scratch. If you’d like a personalised holiday itinerary, or a fabulous food & wine tour, then I also offer those services. But you do have to pay for that. I’m not complaining, but I always feel a bit mean when I don’t have time to get back to these people.

Have to say though, that it always makes me happy when I get an email from someone recently back from a holiday in Sevilla who tells me what a fabulous resource my sites were for them, how they helped them have a much better time than they would have managed on their own. That makes my day!  🙂

swedish chef

*Rant Alert*… When I first started doing my Sevilla Tapas Tours six years ago there were two other guys also doing food tours in Sevilla. Roger and Sam. Seriously, that was it. Then a couple years or so ago, some chica from Triana STOLE my name (Sevilla Tapas Tours) and started using it all over social media, even buying Google Ads so she’d come out on top of searches. When I asked her why she was doing this, using an already established brand, her reply was to REGISTER my name. Previously another git in Malaga had likewise copied my tours and price lists (which do not appear online) so both of these losers had obviously sent me emails pretending to be clients, and had used their ill-begotten information to start their own tour biz. Whatever. I know who they are, and they are nobodies.

Fast forward to last January (2015) when I launched We Love Tapas and suddenly everyone with the ability to create a website was offering tapas tours in Sevilla. I’m not kidding, there are hundreds of them out there, including someone who chose to copy me after I told them of my new plans. And well, okay. I know my tours are superior. They just are. But that doesn’t mean they will end up at the top of Trip Advisor, simply because the scum often rises to the top with their unseemly methods of getting positive reviews, real or otherwise.

Do I care about that? Well, in terms of We Love Tapas it does pain me that my fabulous team isn’t getting all the TA love they deserve. But we also know we are in this for the long term. And that what we are offering is THE SHIZZ.

And then today happened. I had an interview with a fabulous young woman who I hope will become the next We Love Tapas team member. But as all my chicas are freelance, and also work elsewhere, I have to work around 3 or 4 different freelance schedules. I hope this will change very soon, but for now, it is what it is.

But imagine my surprise and dismay when I found out today that the fabulous young woman is also being “trained” to give cooking classes at yet another of these “unique exerience” tour guide companies.

I mean WTFUCKINGFUCK?? This is going too far.

For the record, I am an amazing cook, as anyone who has had the good fortune to eat at my home will attest to. But would I offer cooking classes to visitors to Sevilla? Well, no. One, because I am not a trained chef. And okay, you don’t necessarily have to be a trained chef to give a cooking class… but you sure need more than just one or two training sessions. If I ever did decide to give cooking classes I would research the hell out of the dishes I wanted to present, the history as well, the ingredients would become close to my heart and I would know where each item came from. Because THAT is what anyone paying good money for a cooking class is looking for, and it’s also what they deserve. This would take me, even with my already vasty experience in this field, at least a month or so. I would meet with chefs, I would source the best ingredients. In short, a tour guide with no cooking experience CANNOT be trained to give a cooking class or any worth in one or two quick sessions. Impossible.

I am so pissed off with this glut on the market of shit tours that not only offer shit tours, but they also treat their guides like shit. And the public is lapping it up because – hey! – they’re cheap, and these guys also have cute websites and know how to get (fake) Trip Advisor reviews. When I look at the Sevilla food and wine tours on offer these days I see about half a dozen that I’d consider worthy. Run by people who care, with experience. I’m presently working on collaborating with these people, as well as with the Tourist Boards in Sevilla and throughout Andalucía. There will always be tour companies whose main concern is making a buck. And hey, I am doing this for a living too. But let’s not make money at the expense of others who trust in us to know what we are doing, who are hoping for the best experience possible. I provide that. And I want to work with others who want to do the same. To hell with the rest of them.
