friends, social media, tapas, twitter

A couple of days ago on Twitter someone I’ve known there for a couple of years recommended that someone else get in touch with me as they were coming to Sevilla this week. And so they did.

This afternoon Peter and I met with Sarah Jane Evans and her husband Richard for a bit of a tapeo and we had a great time going to a couple of my favourite spots. And just before we finished up Sarah Jane gave me this book she’d written about Seville, which was published in 1992. Very cool.

Made me think about all the great connections – and friends – I’ve made on Twitter over the years. In fact, it turned out that Sarah Jane and I have a lot of the same Twitter pals in common, probably not so surprising as they are all mostly food and wine people. Good ol’ social media!

How do you meet new people?

cats, IKEA, stuff

It began as what I hoped was going to become a normal morning at casa az, with me sitting up in bed with my new iPad, catching up on this and that. The cats had been fed, Peter had gone off to work and I was feeling good. So when Azar came back to bed after a second light brekky and a long drink I snuggled up with him and all felt right with the world, right up until he suddenly hurled all over my clean sheets, partially digested cat biscuits and a LOT of liquid spewed everywhere.

This led not only to getting up very abruptly but also to doing three loads of washing (even the mattress protector had been soaked through!). Luckily it’s been one of those bright sunny spring days with a brisk dry breeze. And so then, possibly in a fit of laundry madness, I decided I would also wash the cover of the red IKEA chair I bought last year. You know, now that I have the iPad and am reorganising my upstairs room, I suddenly had a vision of me comfortably sitting up there working on the iPad and looking out over the terraza…

Have any of you ever washed IKEA furniture covers? It took forever to get the damn things off (also washed the one on the footstool thingy), had to roll and tug the material off the clingy spongy cushion inside. And now that they are upstairs drying on the line – and looking considerably smaller! – I am having serious doubts about ever getting the cushions back inside them. I know, such a vexing life I lead. But I also went to the gym and got lots of social media work done.

What did you do today?

change, home, life stuff, sewing, work

For over a year now my fabulous upstairs room has barely been used. This is about to change.

It’s funny how chance encounters can make such a difference. The other day I stopped by my friend Maria’s shop and found her chatting with a rather exotic looking woman called Fourat. A few minutes later all three of us were sitting at La Azotea up the street ordering wine and tapas, and an hour or so later I was over at Fourat’s house (turned out she lives on the same street) setting up a Twitter account for her and talking about our various projects.

One of the many things that came up was my now sadly abandoned clothing biz and I mentioned how I hadn’t sewn anything in ages although I still had TONS of fabric. And so this morning Peter and I cleared off one of the tables upstairs and set up my sewing machines so that they are there and ready to go whenever I feel inspired, as one thing that always puts me off sewing is having to set everything up and tear it all down again afterwards. The other thing is that I don’t actually like sewing, but that’s partly to do with the first thing.

Anyhow… it’s such a perfect room for sewing because of the lovely natural light and it’ll be great to actually be using that room. Until now it’s mostly just been Peter’s classroom for the couple of students that come to the house, even though there’s a comfy chair for reading and a music system set up. I’m sure that once I’m spending more time up there it will also inspire me to start doing more with the terraza. And all because of one chance meeting. Fourat (who gives classes in Lebanese and Mediterranean cooking) and I are also planning a project or two together, so stay tuned for that…

It was just over a year ago that I mentioned over here that I’d just got my first glowing review on Trip Advisor for my Sevilla Tapas Tours.

Well, as of last week I am now up to ten! Which may not seem like a lot when you consider it’s fewer than one review a month, but I’m actually very pleased about it. For me each tour is quite unique and personal so getting positive feedback like that really means a lot, and inspires me to “keep up the good work”.

What inspires you with your work?

iberian pork, sevilla, seville, spain, tapas

One of the perks of having run the Sevilla Tapas blog for almost five years now is that I occasionally get invitations to interesting (usually food-related) events. What’s also interesting is that – as a blogger – I am getting acknowledged as “press” and even – gasp! – as a writer.

Yesterday I was invited to Restaurante Alcuza by gastronomy photographer Manolo Manosalbas, to preview their “Iberian Pork Days” menu, which will be available to the public starting today until March 3rd. Everything from starters to dessert featured cerdo Ibérico de bellota, the best of the best, made from acorn-fed blackfoot free-range pigs.

I have to admit that I wasn’t crazy about the ice-cream, but everything else was sensational and was perfectly accompanied by wines from Bodegas Torres. After six tapas I was quite happily stuffed! I was also glad to have a chance to revisit Alcuza as I had first gone there almost two years ago but hadn’t been back. Question of too many tapas bars, too little time and money. But I will definitely be back to Alcuza again soon.

Looks good, doesn’t it?
