merenderoRemember that lunch I mentioned with Victor and Andrew? We went to El Merendero, located right on Malagueta beach in the landmark Antonio Martín building. After having been abandoned for many years it was transformed into La Moraga by superchef Dani García in 2010, which was then bought by another group that continued to run it as La Moraga, but without the same spirit. Recently the space was taken over by Grupo Gorki, which has transported three of its restaurants from the city centre to the beach: El Tres, Bao and El Merendero. I’d been to El Merendero for tapas at the bar, but this was the first time trying out the restaurant.

Malaga June 2016

As you can see, it wasn’t half bad! What you see up there is Málaga sausage tartare, crispy fried lemon boquerones, artichokes topped with jamón and chopped egg, and – the star dish – tuna parpatana au jus with soufflé potatoes.

andrew victorAfter lunch we stopped for a penúltima on the rooftop of recently opened Roommate Valeria. A perfect afternoon with dear friends.

jamon jamon

For those of you who don’t follow the wonderful @WeWantPlates on Twitter, it features (as the name suggests) photos of weird and, sometimes frankly disgusting, ways of serving food that leave you seriously wishing for a plate. Everything from the almost standard roof slates and mini frying baskets, to various shoes, hats, toys, etc. Always good for a laugh (or sometimes a retch).

Anyhow, at the wine awards this week we were served a few snacks afterwards and suddenly THIS thing came around. I don’t know what it’s supposed to be. A jamón volcano with bread stick lava spewing out the top? It didn’t do anything to harm the wonderful jamón attached to it, but it also didn’t do anything to inhance it. So you know… why not just use a plate?

premio (1)

So honoured to receive this award (despite the typo! 😉 )… it’s still amazing to me that what started as a hobby 9 years ago has turned into a growing business, helping visitors learn about and enjoy the wonderful gastronomy of my adopted city. Being recognised by the Gourmets de Sevilla and Fogones de Sevilla organisations is a huge deal. This award was for best personal promotion of Sevilla’s gastronomy via my blogs, social media and food tours. And I was in excellent company as my friend Juan Gomez (La Azotea) and Michelin star chef Julio Fernández (Abantal) also won awards that evening. premio (2)As you can see, Morcilla had to get her nose into the SWAG.premio (3)Too bad they didn’t let this person paint the plaque. 😛

sevilla gastronomic heritage
It’s out and about! The Seville Gastronomic Heritage guide to tapas.
You can find the app here… Visita Sevilla

Establishments suggested come from a popular survey conducted by Tourism Board of City of Seville website between April 15 and September 15, 2013, as well as from a selection prepared by a technical commission of experts composed of Julio Fernández, Chef of the Michelin Star restaurant Abantal, Fernando Huidobro, president of the Andalusian Academy of Gastronomy and Tourism, Javier Compás, wine tasting technician, journalist and gastronomic writer. Shawn Hennessey, best gastronomy Twitter 2013 and author of Sevilla Tapas gastronomy tours. And Paco Sánchez, historic bar-restaurant owner in town, former owner of Bar Giralda and Bar Estrella. As a rule, these establishments are limited to the traditional and touristic heart of the city, although some other establishments are also included beyond that area because of uniqueness, quality and tradition.

TDS award

Best individual Twitter account for Gastronomy in Sevilla.

Below is the prize that came with it. Not sure whether to sprinkle it overy my salad or dab it behind my ears. Am super thrilled about this and will be writing a proper blog post about it soon on Azahar’s Sevilla. Stay tuned…
